Winged Kelp

Juvenile Winged Kelp (Alaria marginata), 9 March 2013

Look for the conspicuous midrib running through the center of each blade.  Although these blades were about the size of my hand (some longer, some shorter), mature blades in the summer can be very long, e.g., longer than a person is tall (2.5-4 meters or 8-13 feet)!

Winged Kelp is found along wave-swept rocky shores from Kodiak Island, Alaska to Point Conception, California.
