Large swell and flying foam

10-14 foot swell today led to impressive wave splashes against the shore.

Then strong northwest winds in the afternoon (~20 mph) led to significant foam along the shoreline.  Proteins in the water were whipped up into dense foam (sometimes over a foot deep!).  With the stronger gusts, pieces of foam up to about the size of a volleyball would fly through the air.  In these conditions there is often quite a bit of foam blowing up over the cliffs and into the grassland.

Look for the airborne foam in the foreground.
